Apoyándonos en el análisis gráfico, planteamos una revisión sobre los protocolos de pensamiento y generación formal de la arquitectura andaluza del XVI. La lectura abstracta de la obra de Vandelvira permite comprender las lógicas proyectuales con las que, en aquel momento, fueron resueltas muchas de las obras que han escrito las mejores páginas de nuestra historia.
El espíritu indómito de Andrés de Vandelvira, entre otros lugares, queda reconocible en la transformación renacentista del crucero de la Basílica de Santa María la Mayor en Linares. En el estudio del vaciado volumétrico interior del templo se observa bien el cambio de escala y lenguaje que se impone en la nueva traza, en relación con las naves góticas preexistentes.
El tamaño y la limpieza formal son gestos característicos que se van repitiendo en las intervenciones de Vandelvira y que, como podemos comprobar, quedan también reflejados en esta elegante obra linarense.
En este artículo profundizamos sobre la solución acordada para transformar el espacio de la antigua iglesia, a la manera del Renacimiento del sur peninsular. En paralelo, analizamos el cambio de paradigma procedimental del momento puesto que, para resolver este tipo de proyectos, fue necesario atajar los problemas desde enfoques abstractos que permitiesen una simplificación gráfica de los mismos.
El espacio de la sacristía, como arquetipo con suficiente autonomía dialéctica, es capaz de revelar parte de la lógica proyectual del conjunto al que sirve. Entendidas como fragmentos de un todo, las sacristías evalúan la lógica organizativa del programa funcional integral del templo; pero entendidas desde la independencia y desde su lenguaje propio, son buenas muestras para comprender el fin último que los autores quieren dejar patente a través de su arquitectura.
En este ámbito parece natural encontrar a Vandelvira, pues podemos hacer una buena aproximación a su pensamiento arquitectónico a partir de la revisión de algunas de las fórmulas ensayadas en determinadas realizaciones. Así ocurre en la Sacristía de la Catedral de Jaén, la Sacristía de la Capilla de El Salvador de Úbeda, o en otras construcciones también con influencias similares a éstas como sucede, por ejemplo, en el Hospital de Santiago o la Capilla para el Deán Ortega en la Iglesia de San Nicolás de Bari, ambas en Úbeda y, por similitud formal, también en las propuestas de Huelma, La Guardia, Linares o Villacarrillo.
El contenido se focaliza en conseguir una reconstrucción ideal y un entendimiento, a través de la comparación y de los principios básicos constructivos y geométricos de modelos semejantes, de uno de los elementos arquitectónicos más característicos y representativos de la Arquitectura del Renacimiento Andaluz: el soporte. Para ello se propone como objeto de estudio las ruinas de la Iglesia de Santa María de Cazorla, cuyo estado inconcluso permite utilizarlas como tapiz sobre el que encajar piezas inexistentes que derivan del análisis estilístico, geométrico y formal que, por comparación, podemos deducir de arquitecturas equivalentes. La idealización de los modelos permitirá que el estudio de los soportes pueda acercarse con precisión sobre los requerimientos espaciales, métricos y constructivos que se detectan.
<p>La obra de Vandelvira puede ser leída a través de indicadores de calidad, que nos llevan a defender la importancia de los mecanismos gráficos empleados por el arquitecto para la definición de la corporeidad espacial de sus realizaciones. Así, resulta sintomático el hecho de que en sus proyectos siempre se reconozca un espacio abstracto idealizado que se manifiesta en el corazón del edifico; y para cuya consecución, Vandelvira tuvo que planificar mecanismos de articulación geométrica significados por su capacidad de liberación de la escala, la forma o la materia; pues, no en balde, muchas de estas soluciones fueron empleadas de forma recurrente, con independencia del programa, la traza de la planta, la dimensión altimétrica del conjunto o, incluso, el despiece estereotómico definido.</p>
