Considerando que as pesquisas turísticas têm se aprofundado em questões de cunho social e, com isso, buscam ferramentas que aproximem o pesquisador das realidades estudadas, o objetivo deste artigo é apresentar uma discussão sobre a adequação da fotoetnografia enquanto recurso metodológico útil ao desenvolvimento de pesquisas acadêmicas na área de turismo e hospitalidade, especialmente quando há ênfase em manifestações socioculturais. Esse objetivo foi alcançado por meio de um ensaio teórico combinado com pesquisa empírica utilizando a metodologia para demonstrar sua adequação. A etapa empírica foi realizada na cidade de Chapada do Norte (MG), uma comunidade remanescente de quilombos no Vale do Jequitinhonha, registrando a principal festa tradicional da cidade. Utilizamos as etapas da técnica fotoetnográfica propostas pelo antropólogo Achutti e, a partir de 1.300 registros fotográficos próprios, elaboramos uma narrativa fotoetnográfica composta por 31 imagens. Por fim, conjugando as etapas teórica e empírica, destacamos os potenciais, vantagens e limitações da técnica fotoetnográfica. Conclui-se que a metodologia se revela eficaz e pode ter diversas aplicações para os estudos em turismo e hospitalidade, especialmente em relação a manifestações socioculturais. Tem-se como limitação o não aprofundamento quanto a fenômenos e espaços naturais.
