RESUMOAs proteínas de choque térmico (heat-shock proteins -Hsp) são estruturas ubíquas e conservadas na evolução das espécies. São sintetizadas por uma grande variedade de seres vivos. Enquanto algumas são constitutivas, outras são marcadores de estresse celular. Há considerável homologia molecular entre Hsp bacterianas e humanas. Este mimetismo antigênico pode induzir a sínte-se de anticorpos cruzados a partir de infecções. Anticorpos contra várias Hsp são detectáveis em doenças do tecido conjuntivo (DTC) e doenças auto-imunes do ouvido interno. O significado patogênico destes achados é ainda discutível. A Hsp de 65 kilodaltons (kDa) é componente da placa aterosclerótica. Em anos recentes, anticorpos anti-Hsp de 60/65 kDa foram associados ao deflagramento do processo aterosclerótico. Nesta revisão, discutimos os achados acerca destes anticorpos tanto em doenças autoimunes como na aterosclerose coronária e cerebral.
