Da experiência colonial francesa no Maranhão do início do século XVII, a França Equinocial, resultou a publicação de duas importantes narrativas pelos missionários capuchinhos Claude d’Abbeville e Yves d’Évreux. Esse corpus de obras francesas é marcado por transcrições em língua tupi, em particular de arengas de chefes indígenas. O índio tupinambá que surge dotado de fala nessas narrativas missionárias é também fruto de uma “herança” do relato do calvinista Jean de Léry, ao qual se atribui, legitimamente, a “invenção do selvagem”. Por sua vez, muito longe do pessimismo dogmático do huguenote sobre as possibilidades de conversão dos índios, marcado de primitivismo, a escrita missionária dos capuchinhos também contribuiu, utopicamente, para a “invenção do selvagem” na França, no interior da experiência mística que suas descrições encenam.
EntrevistaNão restam quaisquer dúvidas quanto ao fato de Philippe Descola ser uma das grandes figuras da antropologia contemporânea. A posição que ocupa como titular da Cátedra de "Antropologia da natureza", que inaugurou em 2000, no Collège de France, a sua atuação na École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales e o reconhecimento da importância de sua obra, expresso em distinções institucionais, não dizem tudo sobre as grandes exigências que sustentam o seu trabalho: uma experiência etnográfica profunda, uma ambição teórica sólida e uma erudição sem par.Se, por um lado, a sua obra escrita, no estilo elegante que é o seu, permite supor essas exigências, assim como reconhecer nelas o papel fundamental de Claude Lévi-Strauss em sua trajetória, por outro, a entrevista é uma ocasião privilegiada de tornar visíveis os seus efeitos no trabalho antropológico e, mais ainda, nas ciências sociais, hoje.Foi assim que Descola, que esteve na Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro em 2012, como titular da Cátedra Claude Bernard, 1 falou a um auditório de professores e alunos sobre a sua concepção de antropologia, sobre a sua experiência como curador da exposição La fabrique des images, em 2011, e sobre as suas perspectivas de estudo mais recentes, em torno de uma antropologia da paisagem. Ao final deste percurso em vários níveis, que vai da separação epistemológica entre ciências da natureza e ciências da cultura aos nossos próprios modos de percepção do mundo, praticamente tudo estará posto em questão e proposto a ser repensado, de modo a compor um notável sistema teórico que pretende, tão somente, ir além.Andrea Daher: Como se pode ler em seu livro Par-delà nature et culture [Para além de natureza e cultura], 2 seu projeto intelectual teve como ponto de partida uma humanização do mundo animal e vegetal pelos povos autóctones e desembocou numa espécie de extensão, de ampliação da própria noção de natureza. Ela se torna uma espécie de continuum que integra os homens, os animais, as plantas, muito distante de nossas concepções mais comuns (por exemplo, a da natureza como exterioridade ou como espaço virgem). A atitude de tolerância frente à alteridade indígena e a representação do índio tupinambá docilmente "convertível" contidas no relato do capuchinho Claude d'Abbeville,Histoire de la Mission... en l'isle de Maragnan (1614), são claramente tributárias do livro do huguenote Jean de Léry,Histoire d'un voyage fait en la terre du Brésil (1578). O capuchinho parafraseia o huguenote em várias passagens, mostrando o índio como objeto de análise "etnográfica", sem excluí-lo - como faz Léry - da possibilidade de salvação. Provavelmente, Claude d'Abbeville responde, desta forma, às expectativas do público francês, num contexto de exortação à colonização do Maranhão e de propaganda da obra apostólica da Ordem dos Capuchinhos.
Andréa Daher, Écrire la langue indigène. La grammaire tupi et les catéchismes bilingues au Brésil (XVIe siècle), p. 231-250. Ce travail est une réflexion sur certaines pratiques lettrées dans le Brésil du XVIe siècle. Il étudie : les conditions de production éditoriale des catéchismes bilingues et des grammaires de la langue tupi de façon à déterminer le caractère de co-extensivité de ces objets imprimés; les conditions d'écriture de ces œuvres au travers de l'établissement des modèles qui orientent les représentations de l'Indien - ou de la langue indigène - fondés sur des catégories théologico-politiques, comme par exemple la «convertibilité» ou l'«inconstance»; les conditions de réception des grammaires et des catéchismes, à partir de la définition du public visé et des usages de ces textes par des missionnaires, des colons et des Indiens.
Ce texte porte sur l’inscription des « codes relationnels » établis avec les Indiens Tupinamba dans les récits des capucins Claude d’Abbeville et Yves d’Évreux, au début du xviie siècle, dans une perspective comparative par rapport au livre du huguenot Jean de Léry, dont ils sont tributaires. Il s’agit de répondre à la question de l’historicité de la notion de sympathie, dans la mise en place de critères d’identification (atribution de similitude) et de relation (hiérarchie) entre les hommes. L’analyse met en évidence les usages de la « sympathie » et de l’« amitié » comme des marques des codes relationnels franco-tupi, selon les conceptions de la théorie des humeurs et, en particulier, sur les bases d’une « théologie naturelle » dans ses usages politiques. Pour cela, on considère les matrices théologiques, politiques et éthiques présentes dans les traités catholiques du début du xviie siècle, qui gouvernaient alors les relations d’alliance entre les peuples, et qui ont déterminé les modes relationnels et d’identification établis avec les Indiens tels qu’ils sont représentés dans les récits capucins.
