RésuméDepuis l’époque où le suicide était traité par la justice canadienne au même titre qu’un meurtre prémédité jusqu’à la décriminalisation de la tentative de suicide en 1972, l’évolution de la réaction sociale à l’endroit du comportement suicidaire a connu un renversement spectaculaire. À l’aide d’une analyse des procès pour tentative de suicide au Québec entre 1892 et 1972, nous analyserons dans cet article le déplacement de l’interprétation de la tentative de suicide dans les cours de justice. Nous verrons que si le droit et la science médicale s’opposent à l’occasion pour imposer leur explication de la tentative de suicide, ils ne s’excluent pas mutuellement, se renforçant parfois l’un l’autre. En outre, nous constaterons que la réaction sociale au comportement suicidaire avait commencé à migrer du judiciaire au médical au sein même des cours de justice appelées à juger les personnes accusées de tentative de suicide, procédant ainsi de facto à une décriminalisation avant l’heure.
RésuméÀ trois reprises au cours du siècle dernier, la situation frontalière de Hull, entre l’Ontario et le Québec, a concentré en des points précis de son territoire un nombre important de débits d’alcool et donc une mouvance sociale (à la fois festive et « criminelle » ou tout au moins interlope) qui est devenue intolérable pour les élites locales. Le présent article fournit une interprétation géographique et historique de ces trois cycles d’ordre et de désordre urbains. Informé par les réflexions théoriques récentes sur le lieu, il interprète l’espace festif de Hull à la fois comme résultat contingent de processus divers, médiateur des relations sociales et foyer de représentations qui ont participé à la dynamique de ce lieu sous tension. Enfin, en inscrivant son analyse dans le cadre d’une géographie frontalière, il met en lumière le caractère unique de Hull, ville située au contact des populations francophone et anglophone, québécoise et ontarienne ayant eu, de longue date, des attitudes culturelles bien différenciées en matière de consommation publique d’alcool.

In welke richting heeft bijna op onafgebroken manier een dergelijke wind geblazen door de hervorming van het wetboek? Welke sociale actoren wogen voldoende zwaar om voor hun belangen invloed uit te oefenen op het legi- feratieproces ? En tenslotte, welke zijn de sociale weerklanken die moeten worden gedeco- deerd in de historische cruciale parenthèse van 1892-1927?
