The characterization of materials is an area of extreme importance for engineering, it uses a range of instrumental techniques to provide an information bank for material analysis and selection. In the treatment of iron ore the mineralogical characterization is done, almost exclusively, by optical microscopy. However, materials with very fine granulometry, below 4 μm, make their preparation and visualization restricted in this equipment. The present work aims to identify the minerals Hematite, Magnetite and Goethite in samples of tailings from the iron ore processing, employing a Bartington MS3 that evaluates the magnetic susceptibility as a function of the temperature. These measurements make it possible to identify Curie temperatures characteristic of Magnetite (580 °C) and Hematite (675 °C), as well as Goethite's Neel temperature (120 °C). The results showed that the application of the technique is of great value for the identification of the magnetic bearing minerals and the quantification of the magnetic potential of the sample.
TECHNOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF STEEL SLAG AbstractThe global steel industry is seeking, increasingly, technology to make your business more sustainable and competitive production process. One of the great opportunities, already known in this industry is the processing of their waste in co-products for resale in the market. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of two steel slag through a technological characterization. One of the samples is from the electric arc furnace (FEA), and other oxygen converter (Basic Oxygen Furnace -BOF or Linz Donawitz -LD). For the development of the research were used a jaw crusher, a series of Tyler sieves, fluorescence technique of X-ray, microscopy by TIMA-MIRA system. The characterization results helped to identify and quantify the chemical elements and phases present in the slag, which had iron content above 20%, CaO content above 25%, the absence of P and Na and predominance of CaSi, CaFe and ferrous phases
MINERALOGICAL COMPOSITION OF INFLUENCE ASSESMENT ON ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN MANGANESE ALLOY PRODUCTION AbstractThe high consumption of electricity in manganese alloy manufacturing process, combined with a low availability of this resource in Brazil, justifies the search for more efficient processes that promote increased competitiveness and sustainability of the business. This study aimed to quantify the electricity consumption in the production of manganese alloys, depending on the mineralogical composition of the feedstock in electric arc furnaces. The methodology consisted of four basic steps: literature review of the mineralogical and chemical characterization of manganese ores used in the process, raising the production history in terms of energy consumption and proportion of minerals in the feed metal loading in the reactor, treatment and discussion data and, finally, preparation of the article. The results showed an order to prioritize the supply of minerals with better process performance. The ores are in the best order for the worse, Carajás manganese ore (Azul), Urucum manganese ore and Carbonatado Sílico manganese ore (Morro da Mina).
