The goal of this work was to evaluate the effect of ascorbic acid (AA), calcium chloride (CC), L-cysteine hydrochloride (Cys) and EDTA on prevention of enzymatic browning of fresh-cut apple banana. The following combinations were used: (i) AA 1%+CC 1%+Cys 0.5%, (ii) AA 1%+CC 1%+Cys 1% (iii) AA 1%+CC 1%+Cys 1.5% e (iv) EDTA 1%, building up four treatments of a completely randomly design. Fresh-cut products without chemical treatment were not analyzed because they browned quickly and presented less than 6 h of shelf life. The bananas were treated with sodium hypochlorite, sliced, dipped in chemical treatments, put in packages sealed with 30 µm PVC film and stored for five days at 5+1°C ...
Future climatic scenarios can influence crop yield levels and induce hunger if no actions are taken. In this study, we evaluated the effect of increased temperature and CO 2 concentration on soybean yield components and biomass partitioning, that ultimately determine the crops productivity. This is conducted for two soybean genotypes that differ in their canopy and life cycles. Experiments were set as follows: a) T1 -ambient temperature and 390 molCO 2 •mol -1 , b) T2 -ambient air temperature +2.7 o C and ambient CO2, and c) T3 -ambient air temperature + 2.7 o C and 750 molCO 2 •mol -1 . Results indicate that soybean under elevated CO 2 and temperature (T3), were taller and grains weighed more than under the ambient conditions in both cultivars types. However, yield has not increased substantially due to reductions in the ratio of number of branch/plant, pods/branch and grains/branch which lead also to a lesser number of total pods and grains per plant. The increase of temperature favored the number of pods and grains on branches in the modern type cultivar, and on racemes in the old cultivar. This results in more yield in both cultivars versus plants grown in the current ambient, and higher CO 2 concentration plus temperature. In both cultivars, the pods and grains partition were higher on the ontogenically oldest four branches and racemes, with decrease in the other upper ones. In addition, the biomass allocation in vegetative tissues was higher than reproductive biomass, with intensity cultivar dependent. We concluded that in future the yield could be limited by reduction of the numbers of branches and racemes in plant, and by alteration at source-sink relation, thus, indicating that changes in canopy architecture are needed to better take advantage of the increasing concentration of CO 2 .
ABSTRACTColored shade nets have been used to manipulate the vegetative development, improving the utilization of solar radiation by ornamental plants. This work aimed to study the effect of 50% reduction of PAR on vegetative growth of plants of Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don, using blue and red nets, and black net, in comparison to plants growing under full sunlight (lack of shading). The plants were obtained from seeds and treated for 180 days. Biomass increment and distribution, pigment content (chlorophylls and carotenoids) and foliar nitrogen were evaluated. The red net caused an increase of total dry mass and total leaf area of plants when compared to the blue net, black net and the full sunlight treatment, however, except in relation to the last treatment, the red net caused lower contents of foliar nitrogen and pigments. The higher root/stem and chlorophyll a/b ratios and the lower leaf area and leaf dry mass of plants growing under full sunlight in relation to shaded plants indicate a more prominent effect of the higher irradiance than the spectral alteration. Shading alters significantly the dry matter distribution and the use of shade nets of different colors affects the content of photosynthetic pigments of this species.
ABSTRACTThe use of banana in minimally processed fruit salads have restrictions due to their high lost of firmness after cutting. The goal of this work was to evaluate the effects of ascorbic acid (AA), calcium chloride (CC), L-cysteine hydrochloride (Cis) and Na 2 EDTA, employed in association with modified atmosphere, on prevention of the softening of minimally processed Apple banana. The following combinations were used: 1 (AA 1% + CC 1% + Cis 0,5%); 2 (AA 1% + CC 1% + Cis 1%); 3 (AA 1% + CC 1% + Cis 1,5%); 4 (Na 2 EDTA 1%); forming the 4 treatments of a completely randomly design. The bananas, in maturity stage 6, were treated with a sodium hypochlorite solution 500 ppm, peeled and manually sliced, submitted to the chemical treatments by dipping and wrapped with PVC 30µm films. Later, the slices were stored during 5 days at 5 ± 1ºC e 85 ± 3% UR. The mass loss was linear during the storage period and higher in Na 2 EDTA 1% treated slices. The firmness loss was lesser in the slices under the treatment 3, which presented lower polygalacturonase activity values until the 3 rd day of storage. After the second day of storage, the slices under the treatment 4 s...
