O objetivo geral deste artigo é identificar o impacto das políticas públicas na redução das emissões veiculares de gases de efeito estufa (GEE) no estado de São Paulo (Brasil), a partir de 2009, ano de promulgação da Política Estadual de Mudanças Climáticas (PEMC), até 2018, quando há uma diminuição das emissões ocasionada pelo aumento da utilização de etanol. Como metodologia, utilizou-se de uma vasta revisão de literatura, coleta e análise de dados, empregando-se inclusive o coeficiente de Pearson para calcular a correlação entre os dados levantados. A análise permitiu identificar a relação das emissões veiculares de GEE diretamente com o histórico da frota, preços médios dos combustíveis e Produto Interno Bruto paulista. Observou-se que os maiores responsáveis pelas emissões veiculares de GEE no estado de São Paulo foram os veículos a diesel, principal combustível utilizado por caminhões. No segmento individual de passageiros, o etanol desempenhou um papel substancial para diminuição das emissões, entretanto ainda não houve uma diminuição significativa do volume destas, sendo incerto o alcance da meta de emissões veiculares estipulada pela PEMC para o ano de 2020. Portanto, faz-se necessário a implementação de políticas públicas sustentáveis pensadas a curto, médio e longo prazos, e que contribuam de forma mais efetiva ao segmento rodoviário.
