Lymphoma is one of the most common malignancies worldwide. Subtype distribution is different throughout the world. Some reports from the Middle East are in record. This article is trying to report the subtype distribution of lymphoma in Iran and compare it to that of Western, Far East Asian and Middle Eastern countries. A retrospective study was done on all lymphomas diagnosed in a large referral center in the South of Iran during a time period between 2009 and 2014. All diagnoses have been made according to 2008 WHO classification. A total number of 1085 cases with diagnoses of lymphoma retrieved. Twenty-nine cases (2.6 % of all) were precursor lymphoid neoplasm, 608 cases (56 % of all) were mature B cell neoplasm, 115 cases (10.5 % of all) were mature T and NK cell neoplasm, and 333 cases (30.6 % of all) were Hodgkin lymphoma. The six most frequent subtypes of mature B cell neoplasm were diffuse large B cell lymphoma, NOS (57 %), Burkitt lymphoma (7 %), small lymphocytic lymphoma (6.9 %), mantle cell lymphoma (5.7 %), extranodal marginal zone B cell lymphoma (5.2 %) and follicular lymphoma (3.6 %). Among mature T and NK cell neoplasm, mycosis fungoides was the most common type (43.4 %) followed by peripheral T cell lymphoma, NOS (20 %) and angioimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma (9.9 %). Of Hodgkin lymphoma cases, 90.6 % were classical type and 9.3 % were nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma. Extranodal involvement was seen in 42.2 % and GI tract was the most common site. Lymphoma frequencies were similar to that of Middle Eastern countries except for lower rate of follicular lymphoma and higher incidence of diffuse large B cell lymphoma, NOS and small lymphocytic lymphoma.

Spinal cord compression is uncommon in spinal osteochondromas because in most cases the tumor grows out of the spinal column. To prevent neurological compromise, complete surgical removal is mandatory when an intraspinal osteochondroma with cord compression is diagnosed, which also helps to prevent recurrence. Our literature review of similar cases indicates that despite the old belief that C2 is the most commonly involved vertebra for osteochondromas, C1 is actually the most commonly involved vertebra in the cervical region.

Background: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) positive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) of the elderly is an entity introduced in the latest WHO classification of lymphoid tumors and defined in patients older than 50 years without prior lymphoma or immunodeficiency. However, recently it has also been seen in patients under 50. There is thus debate as to whether these are separate entities. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, we analyzed de novo DLBCL admitted to our institute over a period of two years. Clinical data included age, sex, nodal and extranodal presentation. The results of an immunohistochemistry (IHC) panel were also reviewed. IHC findings were mainly used to sub-classify DLBCL as germinal center vs. non germinal center types. IHC for identification of LMP-1 (latent membrane protein) and in situ hybridization for detection of EBVencoded RNA (EBER) was performed. EBV prevalence, clinical data and IHC findings were compared between patients under and over 50 years of age. Results: Out of 95 DLBCL, 11.6% were EBV positive (7.5% and 14.5% in the young and old groups). We did not find any significant differences in IHC subclasses and clinical data between EBV positive DLBCL (EBV+DLBCL) of young and old groups. Conclusions: EBV+DLBCL are not exclusive to patients older than 50 years. With regard to clinical data as well as IHC subclasses, no differences were evident between EBV+DLBCL of young and old groups. Our suggestion is to eliminate any cut off age for EBV+DLBCL.

In this study maternal and neonatal outcome evaluated in each trimester of pregnancies with non obstetric laparotomies. In this descriptive-analytic study, 100 pregnant women operated during pregnancy were evaluated. Based on available data a questionnaire comprising general information, kind of surgery as well as the maternal-neonatal outcome was fulfilled. These outcomes were compared in the different gestational ages. In this study, 28 (28%), 48 (48%) and 24 (24%) patients had been operated in the first, second and third trimester, respectively. The patients of these three groups were matched for general characters. Sixty one patients had appendectomy, 30 adnexal mass or torsion, 6% cholecystectomy, 3% abdominal mass. Maternal complications were recorded in 6, 3 and 9% patient in 3rd, 2nd and 1st trimester of pregnancy, respectively. Abortion in first trimester was 8.2%. Low apgar in fifth minute and asphyxia were higher in third trimester. Appendectomy was the most common surgery in the pregnancy. Maternal and fetal complications were higher in third and first trimester. Besides obstetric and pediatric consultation before surgery are necessary for optimal safety of the woman and the fetus.

Since renal failure causes decrease in tumor marker excretion, use of these markers in cancer care and treatment in patients with renal insufficiency or hemodialysis is controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate differences of serum levels of tumor markers CA15-3, AFP, CA19-9 and CEA in patients with impaired renal function. A total of 100 patients referred to the Tabriz Immam Reza and Amiralmomenin hospital from June 2010 to November 2011 were selected for study. Subjects were divided to 3 groups of healthy, dialysis and renal failure but non hemodialysis cases, the last category being re-grouped based on creatinine clearance. No significant relationship between different groups in serum levels of CEA (P=0.99) and CA19-9 (P=0.29) tumor markers was found. A significant correlation was observed between serum levels of AFP (P<0.001) and CA15-3 (P<0.001) and also a tendency between creatinine clearance and CEA (r=0.05, P=0.625). Creatinine clearance significantly correlated with AFP (P<0.001, r=0.53) and CA15-3 (p=0.00, r=-0.412), but not CA19-9 (P=0.089, r=-0.171). According to results of this study it appears that use of tumor markers in patients with impaired renal function should be performed with special precautions.
