ResumoA par r da década de 70, uma das principais apostas da educação em Portugal foi a construção de uma escola promotora da inclusão e da igualdade de oportunidades. Porém muitos desses impulsos reformistas vieram a ser marcadamente comprome dos, ou mesmo alienados, na falta de efi cácia e de jus ça da escola, incapaz de concre zar plenamente as aspirações individuais e colec vas de uma sociedade em mutação. O ar go aborda o problema do abandono escolar experimentado e vivido pelos jovens que não concluíram o ensino secundário e centra-se na análise de conteúdo de 30 entrevistas recolhidas numa amostra de conveniência do grupo dos que, tendo abandonado a escola, a ela voltaram para concluir um ou mais ciclos de estudos. Os resultados levantam duas questões que se abrem para o futuro: 1) Pode a actual rigidez do currículo ser compa vel com uma escola determinada em preparar os indivíduos para a vida? 2) Estarão os agentes educa vos, conscientes, empenhados e preparados para a prestação de um serviço educa vo centrado nos alunos, suas necessidades, potencialidades e aspirações?
