Probability distributions for maximum daily rainfall in the watershed of Rio Verde, Minas Gerais, Brazil A B S T R A C TProbabilistic estimates of extreme events are much relevant for the planning of human activities. Thus, probability distributions enable the estimation of maximum annual daily precipitation events, associated with their respective frequencies. The aim of this study was to identify, among the Gumbel distribution, Gamma at 2 parameters and the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV), which is the most suitable to be used on historical series of annual maximum daily rainfall in the Rio Verde basin in Southern Minas Gerais. The parameters of each distribution were estimated by the methods of moments, maximum likelihood and L-moments. For this, eight rainfall stations were used with historical series of at least 20 years distributed over the watershed. By statistical tests as the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Chi-square, Anderson Darling and Filiben test, the Gumbel distribution obtained the least appropriate adjustments. The GEV distribution by L-moments method was the most appropriate for probabilistic analysis of annual daily extreme precipitation events in the Rio Verde basin and should be prioritized for planning in the region.
ABSTRACT:The stream flow regime of four springs located in the Mantiqueira Mountain Range region (MG) was evaluated and correlated to the respective recharge area, relief characteristics, land cover and physical and hydrologic soil characteristics. The streamflow regime was characterized by monitoring of discharges, calculating the surface runoff and specific discharge and by modeling the discharge over the recession period using the Maillet method. As all recharge areas have similar relief the effect of it on the streamflow was not possible to identify. Analysis included determining the effect of drainage area size, soil characteristics and land cover on the indicators of the streamflow regime. Size of the recharge area had a positive influence on the indicators mean discharge and surface runoff volume and on the regulation of the streamflow regime (springs L4 and L1). The spring under the smallest area of influence provided the worst results for the above mentioned indicators (spring L3). The effect of forest cover (natural and planted), associated with soil characteristics, was evidenced by the indicators surface runoff (in depth) and specific yield, both independent of the recharge area size (springs L4 and L2). The interaction of area size, soil characteristics and forest cover (natural and planted) provided the best results for all indicators of streamflow regime in the springs studied in the Mantiqueira Mountain Range (spring L4).
The understanding of the hydrological behavior of a region is important for the development of activities and socioeconomic enterprises and regional environmental management. Nevertheless, the hydrological monitoring network of a country sometimes does not represent the whole area or the historical series have flaws that must be filled. These problems are more serious in watersheds with greater relevance, as in the case of Rio das Mortes, which is part of the Rio Grande basin that has great hydroelectric potential. Thus,
Probabilistic studies of hydrological variables, such as heavy rainfall daily events, constitute an important tool to support the planning and management of water resources, especially for the design of hydraulic structures and erosive rainfall potential. In this context, we aimed to analyze the performance of three probability distribution models (GEV, Gumbel and Gamma two parameter), whose parameters were adjusted by the Moments Method (MM), Maximum Likelihood (ML) and L -Moments (LM). These models were adjusted to the frequencies from long-term of maximum daily rainfall of 8 rain gauges located in Minas Gerais state. To indicate and discuss the performance of the probability distribution models, it was applied, firstly, the non-parametric Filliben test, and in addition, when differences were unidentified, Anderson-Darlling and Chi-Squared tests were also applied. The Gumbel probability distribution model showed a better adjustment for 87.5% of the cases. Among the assessed probability distribution models, GEV fitted by LM method has been adequate for all studied rain gauges and can be recommended. Considering the number of adequate cases, MM and LM methods had better performance than ML method, presenting, respectively, 83% and 79.2% of adequate cases.Index terms: Probability distribution models, intense rainfall, statistical inference, non-parametric statistical tests.
