Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the change in management accounting and control systems (MACSs) within two large public manufacturing companies in Libya so-called Trucks and Buses Company (TBC) and National Trailers Company (NTC). Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on semi-structured interviews, an analysis of documents and observations. It draws on New Institutional Sociology (NIS) perspective (DiMaggio and Powell’s 1983) as theoretical framework to provide explanations regarding how the MACS in the two companies were shaped by various factors. Findings The main factors identified in shaping the operations of the MACS were the need to comply with the political pressures, the Libyan Government’s laws and regulations, the instructions imposed by the management committee in both companies, leading organizations’ pressures (ISO), customer satisfaction (coercive isomorphism), the influence of professional associations (normative isomorphism) and the need to imitate efficient organizations in order to be more legitimate and successful (mimetic isomorphism). Research limitations/implications The findings of the study have implications for understanding the operations of MACS in developing countries. Future research could focus on alternative theoretical perspectives for the investigation of the process of change in MACS such as structuration theory, agency theory and actor-network theory. Originality/value The proposed theoretical framework provides insights into the process of change by focusing on the interplay between the institutional forces, market forces and intra – organizational power relationships to overcome the criticism of NIS that it downplays the role of market forces and intra – organizational power relations.
The present study is intended to scholarly explore auditors’ perceptions regarding joint audits; whether it can improve audit quality. To reach this goal, participants were enrolled from Big 4, non-Big 4, and other stockholders. In addition, the present study examines the perception of the same stakeholders in terms of how audit concentration affects the audit market in the UAE. Being a qualitative study, 12 semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect required data; 4 face to face and 8 through using Google forms. The finding of the study revealed mixed perception regarding joint audits; it may improve audit quality at the cost of high fees and free-rider problems. Findings of the study has practical implication for policymakers of emerging economies around the globe, such as policymakers who can make joint audits as compulsory. Another significance of the present work is that it has allowed for the perception of stakeholders, who are at the center of the controversial subject of joint audits and audit market concentration. The study suggests that there is a need for removing language barriers; it will benefit some firms in the form of directly communicating with auditors either in English or in Urdu.
This paper aims to investigate the influence of board characteristics on firm performance. The four boards of directors’ characteristics that are of interest in this paper are: CEO duality, independent directors (ID), board size (BS) and board meeting (BM). Return on Assets (ROA) and Earnings per Share (EPS) are used as measurements for firm performance. Data were collected from secondary sources based on a purposively selected sample of 341 Malaysian Public Listed Companies throughout the period ranging from 2003 to 2013. The data were analyzed using the panel data regression model. Results of testing the influences between board characteristics and firm performance are found to be mixed. For example, board meetings showed weak and negative influences on firm performance while independent directors had weak and positive influences only on ROA. Based on the findings of this study, it has been observed that the present listing requirements, which aligned with the assumptions of agency theory, by the Malaysian Code on Corporate Governance (MCCG) and by the Bursa Malaysia requirements, might not be effective as expected in enhancing future firm performance.
This paper aims to review the relevant literature on the role of management accounting in organizational management. It also compares traditional and new or strategic management accounting and their limitations. It focused on the role of management accounting in the constitution of organizations and the ways in which management accounting systems as structures of intentionality both shape and are shaped by shared norms and understandings. The findings help to understand the concerns of the current mainstream in management accounting literature. In fact, the findings cohere with Hopwood and Scapens and their followers in the sense that management accounting is not a static phenomenon but one that changes over time to reflect new forms and practices. It was also found that management accounting is part and parcel of organizational change. By reviewing a subset of the studies on accounting history published during the period 1980 - 2018, this paper updates accounting history literature by focusing on management accounting research. The paper also contributes to the existing literature by presenting the discussions of management accounting and organizational change. However, other studies can consider this paper as starting point to examine other areas of accounting such as financial accounting.
