Cet article présente les résultats d’une enquête portant sur les représentations sociales des enseignants d’histoire et des conseillers pédagogiques en univers social à propos des finalités de l’enseignement de l’histoire. Les résultats montrent d’abord qu’il existe deux sous-groupes d’enseignants aux représentations contrastées : le premier accorde davantage d’importance au développement des compétences et de la méthode historique chez les élèves, tandis que le second porte son attention sur la transmission de la mémoire collective. Les conseillers pédagogiques, de leur côté, placent le développement des compétences et de la méthode historique au coeur de leur représentation des finalités de l’enseignement de l’histoire, et ce, encore plus que le premier sous-groupe d’enseignants. Ainsi, l’enquête révèle que trois représentations des finalités de l’enseignement de l’histoire semblent cohabiter dans le réseau scolaire québécois.

L’article s’intéresse aux débats entourant l’enseignement de l’histoire au Québec et au Canada en puisant dans les écrits qui portent sur les controverses scientifiques et publiques. Il présente l’émergence et l’évolution de controverses au Canada et au Québec de la fin des années 1980 à nos jours. Il propose une réflexion sur les facteurs qui ont fait en sorte que la controverse a été soulevée avec beaucoup plus de force au Québec et qu’elle a mené à des changements significatifs dans les programmes de formation.
Au cours des dernières années, plusieurs recherches ont été menées à propos des représentations des enseignants d’histoire à propos de l’éducation à la citoyenneté ou des finalités de l’enseignement de l’histoire. Cette recherche s’inscrit dans le sillon de ces résultats et vise à identifier les facteurs qui peuvent influencer la formation de ces représentations, notamment la vision qu’ont les enseignants de la capacité de leurs élèves à développer des habiletés propres à la pensée historienne. Contrairement à d’autres études menées précédemment, notre enquête révèle un certain alignement entre les représentations des finalités de l’enseignement de l’histoire, les prescriptions ministérielles et la pratique.
