Periodontal disease is common in feline patients. It is often more challenging for owners to perform oral homecare in cats than dogs, and difficulty in examination of the mouth makes the role of the veterinary team essential. Regular oral examination is important, every six months being recommended for ‘healthy’ mouths, while an examination every three months is recommended where pathology is noted. This article will outline the aetiology, pathogenesis, staging and treatment options for feline periodontal disease.
