Objective: to present evidence of validity of an instrument aimed at evaluating the knowledge of nursing students about the care of the wounded patient, according to the difficulty and discrimination indexes of the items. Method: methodological study conducted in a nursing higher education institution with 117 undergraduate students and 38 professionals from a research group with experience in the area of wounds. For data collection, a questionnaire with 10 multiple choice questions was applied before and after classes on wounds. Results: most of the questions presented low level of difficulty and inefficient discrimination index, requiring a revision of the instrument. After two review stages, the difficulty and discrimination indexes of the instruments improved. Conclusion: an instrument with better evidence of validity was obtained. However, it still requires refinement for later revalidation in the same population.
Background: Depression has a major impact on physical and emotional aspects. It is more prevalent among elderly adults than among those in other age groups and has a relevant influence on the quality of life (QoL) of the population. It is believed that the best scenario for its screening and prevention is primary health care. Our objective was to compare the levels of depressive symptoms and QoL of Brazilian and Portuguese elderly people assisted in primary health care. Method: This was a cross-sectional, comparative study and quantitative approach carried out in Brazil and Portugal between 2017 and 2018. The sample was recruited for convenience and without a sample test. We used the QoL instruments Medical Outcomes Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) and the Beck Inventory to measure depression levels. The data were analysed using the Mann-Whitney U test and the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: A total of 160 elderly people comprised the sample, including 110 Brazilians and 50 Portuguese individuals. The association between the levels of depression and QoL was manifested significantly in the group from Brazil among participants without depression, in the domains of physical role functioning (p-value > 0.001), emotional role functioning (p-value = 0.030) and total score (p-value < 0.001). In Portugal, those who did not experience depression in the following domains: functional aspects (p-value < 0.001), vitality (p-value = 0.002), social role functioning (p-value = 0.020), emotional aspects (p-value = 0.005), mental health (p-value = 0.046), physical dimensions (p-value = 0.025) and mental health (p-value = 0.005). Conclusion: Our study showed an association between the absence of depressive symptoms and better QoL scores in several domains and dimensions. When comparing Brazil and Portugal, better performances were noted in Portugal for both depression and QoL.
Objective: to analyze the association between the socio-demographic and health aspects to the quality of life (QOL) of elderly peoplelinked to the ESF. Methods: this is an analytical, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, carried out in two communities ascribed to the Family Health Strategy (ESF) of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, between December 2015 and March 2016. The data collection instruments were: a socio-demographic and pain characteristics questionnaire; Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Medical Outcomes Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36 Brazilian version). A descriptive and inferential analysis with 5.0% significance levelwere performed. The study followed the ethical precepts of research. Results: In this age group studied, there is a significant association between younger elderly with the domains of functional capacity (Average 67.2 and ρ-value 0.032), emotional health presented average 82.0 (ρ-value 0.040) and physical size (Average 51.4 and ρ-value 0.042). Among the aspects of health and QOL there was a statistical significance between the variable "pain in the last week", with the absence of pain associated with functional capacity (Average 76.7 and ρ-value 0.013) and emotional health (Average 96.
Venous Ulcers (VU) are a serious health problem that affect the Quality of Life (QoL). They are evaluated by many different scales in the literature. We aimed to analyze the correlation between the Medical Outcomes Short-Form Health QoL (SF-36) and Charing Cross Venous Ulcer Questionnaire (CCVUQ) scales. This is a cross-sectional study conducted in a Brazilian center specializing in chronic VU of the Primary Health Care (PHC) provided to patients with active VU. The general QoL instrument SF-36 and the CCVUQ, specific for people with VU, were used. Spearman’s Rho Test determined the correlation between the variables analyzed. Our sample had a total of 150 patients. We found a direct correlation between the domestic activities division (CCVUQ) aspect and the SF-36 Physical role functioning (strong), and Physical functioning (moderate) domains. The Social interaction division (CCVUQ) aspect presented moderate correlation with the domains of the SF-36 Physical role functioning and Physical functioning. The Vitality domain (SF-36) showed moderate correlation with the aspects of CCVUQ Cosmesis division and Emotional status division. The greatest forces of direct correlation were observed between the physical, functional and vitality aspects of SF-36 with those represented by domestic activities and social interaction in the CCVUQ.
Background: To characterize the demands of health and quality of life of elderly people monitored in the primary care of Rio Grande do Norte/Brazil. Methods and Findings:This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study of a quantitative approach with elderly patients monitored by the primary care. The sample was given for convenience, obtaining 120 participants. The research was conducted through an interview with theapplication of the following questionnaires: Mini Mental State Examination, Socio-demographic Data and Pain Characteristics, ShortForm-36, Mini Nutritional Assessment, the primary activities of daily living, the instrumental activities of daily living, Prism 7 and the Geriatric Depression Scale. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS statistical program, in which descriptive and association tests were used. Results:The main demands were related to functionality, followed by nutritional and geriatric depression. The quality of life presented worse results in the domain of general health status and better scores in the emotional and mental health aspects. Regarding the dimensions, the physical health obtained aworse score. Conclusion:Based on the found characterization of the health demands, it is suggested to perform other studies with the same population, enabling to plan and implementing a multidimensional intervention and improving the quality of life of the elderly people.
