Aucun dialogue ni aucune recherche ne prend la forme de suites de syllogismes complets opposés les uns aux autres comme des bataillons d'armées d'Ancien Régime 1 . Qu'ils soient justificatifs 2 , ou purement critiques 3 , les arguments sont rarement présentés in ordine et in extenso : le locuteur présuppose tout un ensemble de propositions dont il considère, plus ou moins sciemment, qu'elles sont évidentes et, au mieux, notoirement connues comme telles [Common Knowledge). On appelle enthymème un raisonnement dont certaine(s) prémisse(s), voire la conclusion, ne sont pas explicitées, mais dont la validité doit pouvoir être exhibée si l'on ajoute les énoncés manquants et présupposés 4 . On se propose ici d'esquisser les traits généraux d'une théorie enthymématique de l'argumentation, susceptible de relier les aspects logique et rhétorique de cette activité spécifiquement humaine.Dans une première partie, on rappellera certaines données historiques, sans prétendre pour autant résoudre la petite énigme que constitue le glissement sémantique qu'a subi le terme à'enthymème. Dans une seconde partie, on tentera d'illustrer la fécondité de la « technique enthymématique » pour aider à l'intelligence de certaines procédures argumentatives, en particulier en philosophie. Enfin, on risquera une conjecture, à savoir que des arguments caractérisés d'habitude comme non déductifs peuvent être interprétés comme des enthymèmes, en particulier dans le cas des inductions et des analogie^. La reprise réglée du thème de l'implicite et la levée de la contrainte de certitude quant aux prémisses permettent d'assouplir certaines divisions tranchées entre logique et argumentation 6 .
