We investigate the two-dimensional (2D) highly spin-polarized electron accumulation layers commonly appearing near the surface of n-type polar semiconductors BiTeX (X = I, Br, and Cl) by angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Due to the polarity and the strong spin-orbit interaction built in the bulk atomic configurations, the quantized conduction-band subbands show giant Rashba-type spin-splitting. The characteristic 2D confinement effect is clearly observed also in the valence-bands down to the binding energy of 4 eV. The X-dependent Rashba spin-orbit coupling is directly estimated from the observed spin-split subbands, which roughly scales with the inverse of the band-gap size in BiTeX.
In the chicken cochlea, the structural features of the cilia bundles of individual hair cells vary systematically along the length of the sensory epithelium. As a first approach to understanding the developmental mechanisms that underlie this precise arrangement of structurally distinct hair cells, the spatiotemporal pattern of the terminal mitoses of their precursor cells was investigated by administering 3H-thymidine, a radioactive precursor to DNA. This demonstrated that the first hair cells were produced during the sixth day of incubation and formed a longitudinal band that extended along most of the length of the sensory epithelium. The epithelium grew further through appositional addition of hair cells at the edges of this first band of cells, and the hair cell addition process expanded into the surrounding areas during the next 3 days. By the ninth day of incubation all the hair cells in the sensory epithelium except for those at the peripheral edges in the distal (apex) portion had been produced through terminal mitoses. Our results have demonstrated that hair cells that have similar stereocilia phenotypes do not all leave the mitotic cycle at the same time.
In an earlier study we reported the isolation of a cytoplasmic dynein from the cytosol of Paramecium multimicronucleatum. In this study we report the isolation and characterization of two cytosolic axonemal dyneins (22S and 12S) as well as a 19S cytoplasmic dynein from the cytosol of whole or deciliated cells using preformed bovine brain microtubules. These three dynein species were characterized according to mass, morphology, vanadate photocleavage patterns, CTPase/ATPase ratios, Km and Vmax values, temperature optima and reactivity with a mAb. For comparison, 22S and 12S axonemal dyneins (ADs) were also isolated and purified from the demembranated axonemes. The 22S and 12S soluble dyneins appear to be related to ciliary ADs in that the 22S soluble dynein is three-headed while the 12S is a one-headed dynein, as determined by negative staining. Ciliary ADs and their corresponding 22S and 12S soluble dyneins isolated from the cytosol also have similar Km and Vmax values as well as vanadate photocleavage patterns and temperature optima. A mAb raised against the soluble 22S dynein reacted with the 22S ciliary dyneins but not the 12S axonemal or the 19S cytoplasmic dynein. All isolated dyneins supported similar microtubule gliding rates but had different ionic requirements for the translocation buffer. These results suggest that: (i) the two soluble 22S and 12S dyneins are precursor molecules of the ciliary dyneins, (ii) the subunits of the outer arm dynein are already assembled in the cytosol as a three-headed bouquet, and (iii) the 22S and 12S soluble dyneins are functional prior to being transported and attached to the axonemes of the cilia.
A 60-year-old man underwent anterior resection for advanced rectal carcinoma. Seven years and 2 months later, right lower pneumonectomy was performed for a metastatic lung tumor. Two years and 2 months thereafter, left adrenalectomy was performed for solitary adrenal metastasis. The patient remained disease-free for 10 months postoperatively, until multiple lung metastases appeared. The patient is alive and well, under mild chemotherapy with oral doxifluridine, 3 years and 5 months after left adrenalectomy. We conclude that patients with solitary adrenal metastasis may benefit from surgical resection and that resection could be considered as a therapy for solitary adrenal metastasis from colorectal carcinoma.
