The results of the present study support the hypothesis that medial olivocochlear bundle might aid in speech perception in noise, thereby suggesting a possible role of cochlear efferent fibers in hearing. The psychoacoustic measures can be used to evaluate the efferent auditory pathways, where it is not possible to record otoacoustic emissions.
We found cortical task-independent and noise-dependent effects concerning speech perception in noise involving bilateral mSTG and left pSTG. These results likely reflect demands in acoustic analysis, auditory-motor integration, and phonological memory, as well as auditory attention.
To appropriately adapt to constant sensory stimulation, neurons in the auditory system are tuned to various acoustic characteristics, such as center frequencies, frequency modulations, and their combinations, particularly those combinations that carry species-specific communicative functions. The present study asks whether such tunings extend beyond acoustic and communicative functions to auditory self-relevance and expertise. More specifically, we examined the role of the listening biographyan individual's long term experience with a particular type of auditory input-on perceptual-neural plasticity. Two groups of expert instrumentalists (violinists and flutists) listened to matched musical excerpts played on the two instruments (J.S. Bach Partitas for solo violin and flute) while their cerebral hemodynamic responses were measured using fMRI. Our experimental design allowed for a comprehensive investigation of the neurophysiology (cerebral hemodynamic responses as measured by fMRI) of auditory expertise (i.e., when violinists listened to violin music and when flutists listened to flute music) and nonexpertise (i.e., when subjects listened to music played on the other instrument). We found an extensive cerebral network of expertise, which implicates increased sensitivity to musical syntax (BA 44), timbre (auditory association cortex), and sound-motor interactions (precentral gyrus) when listening to music played on the instrument of expertise (the instrument for which subjects had a unique listening biography). The objectives of this study were to (a) estimate the prevalence of auditory dys-synchrony in Mysore, a city of one million population in Southern India and, (b) present the results of audiological testing of this clinical population as well as the relationship between these figures. A register-based study design was employed wherein the results of audiological tests of all patients who visited the Department of Audiology, All India Institute of Speech and Hearing between January 2000 and December 2003 were reviewed. Results showed that the prevalence of auditory dys-synchrony was around 1 in 183 in individuals with sensory neural hearing loss. Behavioural thresholds and speech identification scores were variable. Around 60% of the individuals had no measurable speech identification scores. There was no relation between the hearing thresholds and speech identification scores or between otoacoustic emissions and speech identification scores. These results indicate that auditory dys-synchrony is not an extremely rare disorder.
