Artificial diets for the rearing of adult and larvae of South-American fruit flyAbstract -The objective of this work was to adequate artificial diets for the development of larva and adult stages of South-American fruit fly (Anastrepha fraterculus). For the larval stage, the following diets were tested: D1, original diet, with 10 g agar; D2, modified diet, with 3.6 g agar; and D3, modified diet, with dry sugarcane bagasse. For adults, four diets were tested: A, brewers' yeast + honey (2:1); B, refined sugar + yeast extract + crude wheat germ (3:1:1); C, soybean extract + brown sugar + crude wheat germ (3:1:1); and D, brewers' dried yeast + honey (2:1). The evaluated biological parameters were: duration of the egg-pupa period, duration and feasibility of the pupa stage, average mass of pupae, sexual ratio, and duration and feasibility of the egg-adult period. Larval stage development for D1 and D2 was similar, and indicated that the larval rearing can be managed with 1/3 agar quantity used in D1. The dry sugarcane bagasse, used in the artificial diet, negatively affected the larval development. Artificial diets with brewers' yeast + honey and with refined sugar + yeast extract + crude wheat germ are the most adequate ones for adult rearing.

A B S T R A C TBean weevil and maize weevil can cause considerable damage to stored grains. These insects are mainly controlled with synthetic chemical insecticides, which may bring serious problems to human and environmental health. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of the essential oil of clove [Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merrill & Perry (Myrtaceae) (origin: Bahia, season Sep.2014-Feb.2015] in the control of S. zeamais and A. obtectus under laboratory conditions. The essential oil was extracted through the classic hydrodistillation process and its chemical components were identified via gas chromatography. Oil efficiency was tested at the doses of 35, 17.9, 8.9, 3.6, 1.8, 0.4 and 0.2 µL g -1 (derived from a pilot study) for insect control and the LC 50 was determined. The results showed that eugenol was the major compound. The essential oil caused mortality of 100% for both species 48 h after treatment with the concentrations of 17.9 and 35 µL g Atividade inseticida do óleo essencial de cravo-da-índia sobre o caruncho-do-feijão e o gorgulho-do-milho R E S U M OO caruncho-do-feijão e o gorgulho do milho podem causar grandes prejuízos aos grãos armazenados.
-The objective of this work was to study the biology and parasitic potential of Doryctobracon areolatus on larvae of Anastrepha fraterculus. The egg-adult period, the sex ratio, the longevity, the pupal viability, and the parasitism rate of D. areolatus were determined in laboratory, using A. fraterculus as host. The parasitoid development from oviposition to adult emergence required 25.00±1.70 days, the sex ratio was 0.62±0.09, and the mean longevity was 16.36±3.62 days for males and 10.24±1.71 days for females. The mean parasitism rate was 53.50±8.93%, varying from 41.60 to 68.60%, which shows the potential of this parasitoid for biological control of A. fraterculus.
Aganaspis pelleranoi (Brèthes, 1924) (Hymenoptera: Figitidae) is a koinobiont endoparasitoid of larvae of species of the genus Anastrepha and of Ceratitis capitata. It is a candidate for use as a biological control agent, as under field conditions, it may reach a parasitism rate of 62%. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of different constant temperatures on biological parameters of A. pelleranoi when parasitizing the larva of Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann, 1830) (Diptera: Tephritidae), as well as to determine its thermal requirements. The study was conducted in environmental chambers at 18, 20, 22, 25, 28, and 30 ± 1°C; 70 ± 10% relative humidity; and a 12-h photophase. Females maintained at 18 and 20°C produced more progeny than females at other temperatures tested. The longevity of males and females was inversely proportional to temperature, ranging from 49.1 to 3.73 d for females and from 32.1 to 3.8 d for males at temperatures of 18-30°C, respectively. The duration of the biological cycle (egg-to-adult) was influenced by temperature, and ranged from 69.1 d at 18°C to 30 d at 25°C. No preimaginal development of A. pelleranoi occurred at 28 and 30°C. The relationship between temperature and the demographic parameters of A. pelleranoi showed a linear effect over the temperature range of 18-25°C. The lower temperature threshold and thermal constant were 11.69°C and 391.70 degree days, respectively.
