ABSTRACT:Introduction: All newborns exposed to syphilis in pregnancy must have outpatient follow-up. The interruption of this follow-up especially threatens those children who were not treated at birth. Objective: To describe the clinical, epidemiological, and sociodemographic characteristics of pregnant women with syphilis and their newborns, and to investigate the factors associated with the discontinuation of the follow-up. Methods: This is an observational, descriptive, analytical, and retrospective study of medical records of 254 children exposed to syphilis, who were assisted at the Congenital Infectious Clinic of the university hospital of the Universidade Federal do Paraná, between 2000 and 2010. The newborns were classified by reference according to their follow-up. Data were analyzed by means of the binary logistic regression model in order to identify the factors associated to drop out. Results: The factors associated to the interruption of the follow-up were maternal age over 30 years, mothers with 3 or more children, and the absence of cross-infections by HIV and/or viral hepatitis. Conclusion: Such findings demonstrate the need to identify these families and implement strategies to promote the establishment of bonds. A greater rigor to indicate the treatment of the disease at birth is recommended, as most of them do not properly follow up.
Objectives:To analyze the level of functionality and disability of older elderly persons receiving care at a university hospital in Curitiba, Paraná, and identify functional differences between men and women. Method: A descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, based on a convenience sample of elderly persons receiving outpatient care, was undertaken. The Brazilian version of the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS 2.0). Results: A total of 28 people with a mean age of 86.21 (±4.17) were evaluated. Of these 50.0 % were male, 46.4 % were widowed, and 57.1 % performed the evaluated activities independently. There were no significant differences between genders in terms of age ( p≤0.635) or years of study ( p≤0.329), although women showed a higher level of disability than men in general ( p≤0.16). Conclusion: The WHODAS 2.0 proved to be a sensitive tool for the analysis and comparison of the level of functionality of the older elderly. However, it is important to develop prospective studies, with non-convenience samples, for a better reflection on the disability and functionality of older elderly persons.
Recent educational initiatives have emphasised the importance of fostering critical thinking skills in today's students in order to provide strategies for becoming successful problem solvers throughout life. Other scholars advocate the use of critical thinking skills on the grounds that such tools can be used effectively when considering social justice issues. In this article we make the case that the teaching and learning strategies of analytic art criticism can serve as fundamental tools used not just for the study of art but can also centre critical thinking and analysis in all aspects of the art education curriculum. Our argument begins with a review of literature on the use of art criticism for critical thinking and meaning making. Then we describe our efforts to address critical thinking with our students by using the critical analysis model of art criticism and applying it to learning environments for forming reasoned judgments about teaching and learning, and also as springboard for examining social justice issues. We believe that promoting this form of affectively driven, intellectually guided critical thinking makes our students potentially more successful not just in their encounters with art and education, but also in their lives as human beings beyond school.
