1 Adone Agnolin 2 Pós-doutorando do Departamento de História -USPRESUMO: A alimentação do homem é um dado cultural que tem uma importância pelo menos igual àquele pura e simplesmente alimentar. Reservando uma atenção particular à relação que encontramos, entre dado cultural e dado alimentar/ "natural", o presente artigo levará em consideração o fato de que estamos falando de um alimento muito particular: trata-se do homem que se torna, dentro de uma estrutura altamente ritualizada, alimento para outro homem, o qual, por sua vez, vive na perspectiva, altamente significativa para sua cultura, de se tornar, um dia, ele mesmo alimento para os outros. Pelo fato de reconhecer a importância do dado cultural no que diz respeito à alimentação do homem, a Antropologia se apresenta como perspectiva de análise imprescindível. Por outro lado, ela constituirá o esboço de um estudo crítico sobre sua própria caraterística de compreensão/digestão da alteridade cultural. Além do mais, a colocação da antropofagia ritual ("sagrada") no centro de nosso trabalho nos impõe o ponto de vista de uma metodologia de estudo histórico-religiosa. A utilidade dessa perspectiva de estudos está toda contida na adjetivação "ritual", que acompanha esta forma específica de antropofagia. Trata-se, conseqüentemente, de esclarecer esses termos/conceitos (aos quais a escola histórico-religiosa tem dedicado tanta atenção), muitas vezes assumidos de forma acrítica, oferecendo uma significativa contribuição e problematização aos estudos históricos e antropológicos contemporâneos. O presente texto propõe, portanto, uma análise da antropofagia no Novo Mundo nos séculos XVI e XVII, em relação a uma perspectiva, a indagação antropológica, problematizada por uma metodologia de indagação: a História das Religiões. Para tal debate, entendemos nos referir àquela que é conhecida pelo nome de "Escola Italiana de História das Religiões" e que se reconhece no trabalho pioneirístico empreendido por Raffaele Pettazzoni e proficuamente levado para frente por Brelich, De Martino, Lanternari, Sabbatucci, Massenzio.

Este artigo examina como nos catecismos jesuíticos, compostos para a evangelização dos índios do Brasil no século XVI, torna-se central o problema da tradução de termos e conceitos ligados à peculiaridade da "religião" ocidental e à mediação cultural construída pelos tradutores/missionários. In this article the Author is concerned in examining how the jesuits dealed with the translation of central notions and concepts in order to christianize the indians in Brazil during the XVI th century. The creation of a special tupi language which could serve as an instrument of communication between missionaries and indians is analysed.
O presente trabalho, como qualquer outro, tem uma história, com seus momentos sofridos, criativos, de impasses e contá-la, talvez, possa fazê-la parecer patética. Prefiro não me arriscar minimamente nessa empresa. Digamos, simplesmente, que, constituído e construído entre "dois mundos'', não somente geográficos, com ele vivenciei, concretamente, a estraneidade (nos dois lados do mundo) que é pano de fundo de sua elaboração. Nascido de uma profunda sede pessoal, que pode até parecer presunção, estou, todavia, conscientes de seus limites e, conseqüentemente, de não ter saciado a primeira, como de ter ficado aquém da segunda. Acredito, contudo, que esta tese representa uma síntese significativa (mesmo que provisória) de um percurso que não é "meu", mas ao qual pertenço. Por isso, apesar de dúvidas, incertezas e partes não completas me inquietarem, ainda, resolvi fechá-lo, para poder retomar, sucessivamente, sob outras vestes, as problemáticas aqui abordadas.Nesse percurso foram muitos os estímulos, nem sempre vindos de lugares destinados a (e aos quais incumbiria de) fomentar interesses "científicos" e de pesquisa, tanto em um quanto no outro dos "dois mundos". Mas aqui não é lugar de desagradecimentos ... Além do reconhecimento, que se encontra dentro da presente tese, aos pesquisadores -fundamentais para minha formação-, devo reconhecer os estímulos, frutos de importantes relações pessoais, de professores, outros pesquisadores, enfim, "curiosos profissionais", entre esses: Paolo Scarpi, orientador que, desde os caminhos do mundo clássico me acompanhou até as culturas africanas no Brasil, para me convidar a uma "fuga" e, quem sabe um dia, a um "retorno"; Liana Salvia Trindade que ofereceu-se para lançar a "ponte" e Lísias Nogueira Negrão, orientador precioso e preciso nesse meu mais recente percurso.Meus agradecimentos aos amigos que, quando não estavam muito "por dentro" de meu trabalho, com sua valiosa amizade me ajudaram a continuar "por dentro" dele:
