RESUMO -Os autores relatam 16 casos de pacientes com forma meningomielorradicular da neuroesquistossomose mansônica, diagnosticados segundo critérios clínicos, laboratoriais e de imagem, acompanhados no Ambulatório de Neurologia-HUPES-UFBA no período de abril/91 a dezembro/93. Eles foram tratados com praziquantel associado a corticoterapia. O objetivo foi avaliar o grau de eficácia e de segurança da droga na regressão dos sinais e sintomas neurológicos.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: esquistossomíase mansônica, neuroesquistossomose, meningomielorradiculopatia, praziquantel, corticosteróides. Numerosas drogas esquistossomicidas trivalentes, niridazol e hycantone já foram utilizadas no tratamento da neuroesquistossomose, sendo posteriormente abandonadas, fosse pela sua alta toxicidade ou pela sua completa ineficácia terapêutica. Mais recentemente, foram introduzidos o oxamniquine e o praziquantel que se tornaram drogas de eleição para o tratamento da neuroesquistossomose. Têm sido descritos altos índices de cura com praziquantel, com efeitos tóxicos leves, transitórios e dose dependentes. No caso do oxamniquine, outras reações colaterais, além das que ocorrem com o uso do praziquantel, tais como febre, elevação da pressão arterial e convulsões podem ocorrer 13 -23 .A partir de protocolo previamente estabelecido, é avaliada a evolução de 16 pacientes com a forma meningomielorradicular da esquistossomose mansônica, tratados com praziquantel, através de análise clínica, laboratorial e imunológica específica. Visa-se, assim, demostrar o grau de eficácia e segurança terapêuticas da droga na regressão dos sinais e sintomas neurológicos.
