We calculate the parallel (VV) and perpendicular (VH) polarized Raman spectra of amorphous silica. Model SiO2 glasses, uncompressed and compressed, were generated by a combination of classical and ab initio molecular-dynamics simulations and their dynamical matrices were computed within the framework of the density functional theory. The Raman scattering intensities were determined using the bond-polarizability model and a good agreement with experimental spectra was found. We confirm that the modes associated to the fourfold and threefold rings produce most of the Raman intensity of the D1 and D2 peaks, respectively, in the VV Raman spectra. Modifications of the Raman spectra upon compression are found to be in agreement with experimental data. We show that the modes associated to the fourfold rings still exist upon compression but do not produce a strong Raman intensity, whereas the ones associated to the threefold rings do. This result strongly suggests that the area under the D1 and D2 peaks is not directly proportional to the concentration of small rings in amorphous SiO2.
International audienceWe report an experimental study on the confinement of oligothiophene derivatives into single-walled carbon nanotubes over a large range of diameter (from 0.68 to 1.93 nm). We evidence by means of Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy that the supramolecular organizations of the confined oligothiophenes depend on the nanocontainer size. The Raman Radial Breathing Mode frequency is shown to be monitored by both the number of confined molecules into a nanotube section and the competition between oligothiophene/oligothiophene and oligothiophene/tube wall interactions. We finally propose simple Raman criteria to characterize oligothiophene supramolecular organization at the nanoscale
Infrared intramolecular vibrations and lattice modes in the crystalline phase of 2,2'-bithiophene (2T) are investigated using the direct method combined with density functional theory (DFT)-based total energy calculations. For the first time, the far- and mid-infrared responses have been calculated from the Gamma-point modes and the Born effective charge tensors of the 2T crystalline phase. The relative good agreement between the calculated and experimental infrared spectra allows us to assign the origin of the main features of the experimental spectra, which is of particular interest in the far-infrared domain. These assignments are useful for understanding all the properties of the 2T crystalline phase in which phonon-phonon and electron-phonon interactions play an important role.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
