The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of manometric colonic abnormalities and to evaluate the motor effect of intraluminal bisacodyl in a cohort of refractory constipated patients. Twenty-four hour colonic motility recordings were performed in 40 patients referred for a severe intractable chronic constipation. At the end of each recording session the motor effects of the endoluminal instillation of 10 mg bisacodyl were assessed. These patients were compared with 20 healthy subjects. The number of high-amplitude propagating contractions (HAPC) was significantly decreased in patients with slow transit constipation (12 +/- 11.6 vs 1 +/- 8.6, P < 0.001). Based on manometric patterns four groups of patients were isolated. Ten patients had no spontaneous HAPC, no food-induced colonic motor response and significantly lower colonic activity in transverse colon (374 +/- 1220 vs 3249 +/- 3458, P < 0.05). Five patients had significantly increased sigmoid segmental motility (20298 +/- 6364 vs 88780 +/- 3643, P < 0.001) and eight patients had significantly lower number of HAPC without other manometric abnormalities while 17 patients had normal colonic motility recordings. Endoluminal bisacodyl was able to induce HAPCs in all groups of patients. Patients with severe slow transit refractory constipation represented a heterogeneous group and endoluminal bisacodyl was able to promote a propagated motor activity in a majority of patients even in those suspected of having an inert colon.
this research represents a method to detect malaria parasite in blood samples stained with giemsa. In order to increase the accuracy of detecting, at the first step, the red blood cell mask is extracted. It is due to the fact that most of malaria parasites exist in red blood cells. Then, stained elements of blood such as red blood cells, parasites and white blood cells are extracted. At the next step, red blood cell mask is located on the extracted stained elements to separate the possible parasites. Finally, color histogram, granulometry, gradient and flat texture features are extracted and used as classifier inputs. Here, five classifiers were used: support vector machines (SVM), nearest mean (NM), K nearest neighbors (KNN), 1-NN, and Fisher. In this research K nearest neighbors classifier had the best accuracy, which was 91%.
Mosquito species of the Aedes (Stegomyia) scutellaris (Walker) group (Diptera: Culicidae) are distributed across many islands of the South Pacific and include major regional vectors of filariasis, such as Aedes polynesiensis (Marks). Analysis of populations of Ae. polynesiensis at the extremes of its range, from Fiji and from Moorea, French Polynesia, using the rDNA ITS2 (internal transcribed spacer 2) region and six microsatellite markers showed considerable genetic differentiation between them (F(ST) = 0.298-0.357). Phylogenetic analysis of the Wolbachia endosymbionts in three members of the complex revealed that based on the wsp gene they are all very similar and belong to the Mel subgroup of the A clade, closely related to the Wolbachia strain present in the gall wasp Callyrhytis glandium (Giraud) (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae). By contrast they are only distantly related to the A-clade Wolbachia in Aedes albopictus (Skuse), a species closely allied to the Ae. scutellaris group. There was very low differentiation between the Wolbachia in the Moorea and Fiji populations of Ae. polynesiensis.
The control of mosquito borne diseases needs new methods given widespread insecticide resistance in many mosquito species. The inherited endosymbiont Wolbachia, found in many arthropods, provides a biological system to reduce the transmission of these diseases and replace the population of vectors with non-vectors using cytoplasmic incompatibility. The aim of this study was to understand the rate of Wolbachia infection among Culex species in the region and to see the effect of Wolbachia infection on mitochondrial genome. In this study three species of Culex mosquitoes were collected from Shoushtar in south west of Iran and examined for Wolbachia infection by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). All of the C. quinquefasciatus specimens were infected with Wolbachia, while C. tritaeniorynchus and C. theileri showed no infection with Wolbachia. The 340 bp of AT rich of mtDNA was sequenced from 30 individuals, 10 individuals of each species. Three sequence haplotypes were found in C. tritaeniorynchus and C. theileri while there was only one haplotype in C. quinquefasciatus. The reduction of haplotypes diversity may be result of a sweep of Wolbachia in this species.
The Aedes scutellaris complex of mosquitoes contains the most important vectors of lymphatic filariasis in the South Pacific region, particularly Aedes polynesiensis . Six microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized from this species; all were polymorphic and appear to be useful markers for population studies. Five of the primer pairs also amplified homologous products from three other species in the A. scutellaris group and from the important dengue vector Aedes albopictus .
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
