Este trabalho procura fazer um levantamento sistemático de informações que permitam a ilustração dos principais elementos que concorrem para o acesso e permanência dos estudantes oriundos das classes populares na UFCG/CDSA. Nesse cenário, analisamos os ingressos e egressos do curso de Licenciatura em Ciências Sociais, considerando motivos internos: exigências institucionais conectadas ao currículo e a didática, obstaculizando o bom desempenho, ou externos: Insatisfação com o mercado de trabalho, origem socioeconômica; a Universidade que influenciam na formação. Para a coleta de dados, utilizamos metodologias quantitativas (tratamento estatístico) e qualitativas (entrevistas, aplicação de questionário, pesquisa documental e bibliográfica). Os resultados permitiram a averiguação do perfil socioeconômico dos estudantes, porque escolheram o respectivo curso, as dificuldades encontradas nas situações de ensino e aprendizagem e as táticas usadas para se encaixar nas exigências da instituição. A análise mostrou particularidades referentes ao acesso: as causas primordiais de ingresso estão associadas à baixa concorrência no vestibular, localização da Universidade ou falta de conhecimento a respeito do curso. Com relação aos motivos que inclinaram a desistir, vale salientar que o desprazer resultante do emprego esperado, a não participação em projetos e o fato de não contentar-se com o rendimento acadêmico foram variáveis que destinaram, em grande medida, a decisão.
