Cultural interactions in central Russia are famously complex, but of very wide significance. Within the social changes they imply are contained key matters for Europe and Asia: the introduction of Indo-Europeans and other languages, the horse and the chariot, and the transition towards nomadism. Of crucial importance to future research is a sturdy chronological framework and in this contribution the authors offer 40 new radiocarbon dates spanning the conventional Bronze Age in the southern Urals.
This paper discusses the ceramic petrology of fine and coarse wares from Knossos and Mycenae. Many of the fine wares from Knossos contain foraminifera and are of sedimentary origin, while the majority of the coarse wares are of sedimentary origin. This suggests a differing emphasis of pottery production within the Knossos region. The clay sources for several of the Mycenae coarse fabrics are up to 30 km distant from Mycenae, and at least two fabrics were imported to the Argolid. Evidence is now accumulating that coarse wares circulated on a wider regional and inter-regional scale than hitherto suspected.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
