Exercise is Medicine—The Importance of Physical Activity, Exercise Training, Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Obesity in the Prevention and Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract: Type 2 diabetes has reached epidemic proportions worldwide and is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and premature mortality. Diet and physical activity (PA)-based lifestyle interventions have been shown to prevent progression to type 2 diabetes in patients at high risk. Regular PA substantially reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes and a high level of PA is associated with a substantial reduction in type 2 diabetes risk. In addition, there is strong evidence suggesting a steep inverse rel… Show more

“…The HIIT training contains 12 bouts of 1 min running with 90-95% of VO 2 max and 60 s rest at 50% of VO 2 max with 20 m/min speed in the beginning week, which regularly elevated to 30 m/min in the 8th week. Animals in the CO carry out 40 min of treadmill running training with a constant speed of 60-65% of VO 2 max throughout the whole training period [29]. It should be noted that control animals have not performed any exercise training.…”

“…This demonstrates that Agita is allied with the goals of the 'Exercise is Medicine™' (EIM) programme that has sought to increase PA to reduce the risk of obesity and related type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases. 59 The and insufficiently active (<150 minutes/week, 43.7 % to 11.6 %) people (see Figure 6). 62 These activity improvements were attributed, at least Table 1).…”

“…Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and physical activity are important physiological and behavioral measures that predict health outcomes throughout the lifespan. In adulthood, poor CRF and sedentary lifestyle are associated with risk for cardiovascular disease (Kodama et al, 2009;Khan et al, 2015;Laukkanen et al, 2019), Type 2 diabetes (Lavie et al, 2014;Zaccardi et al, 2015), and Alzheimer disease (Kurl et al, 2018;Silva et al, 2019). Improvement of CRF, through engagement in regular physical activity, leads to a significant improvement in health outcomes including lowering risk of all-cause mortality (Harber et al, 2017), cardiovascular disease (Safdar and Mangi, 2020), and diabetes (Tuomilehto et al, 2001).…”
