Novel genera and species of coniothyrium-like fungi in Montagnulaceae (Ascomycota)

Abstract: Based on analyses of concatenated internal transcribed spacer regions of the nrDNA operon (ITS), large subunit rDNA (LSU), γ-actin and β-tubulin gene sequences the taxonomy of coniothyrium-like fungi belonging in the family Montagnulaceae, order Pleosporales, was re-assessed. Two new genera are proposed, Alloconiothyrium, to accommodate A. aptrootii sp. nov., and Dendrothyrium for D. longisporum sp. nov. and D. variisporum sp. nov. One new species is described in Paraconiothyrium, viz. Parac. archidendri sp. n… Show more

“…Taxonomy of this group coniothyrium-like fungi is quite complex and subjected to periodical updates, mainly to accommodate the wealth of DNA sequence data and phylogenetic reassessments of ex-type and other reference strains preserved in culture collections (Verkley et al, 2014;Ariyawansa et al, 2015;Chen et al, 2015). On the other hand, the ITS marker is generally reliable for strain typing and identifications to genus level among this group of fungi (Verkley et al, 2014). Species of Phoma-like fungi are common endophytes of grasses, such as the temperate species Dactylis glomerata and Holcus lanatus (Sánchez Márquez et al, 2007.…”

“…For example, the observed shapes of the conidiophores and conidia were also observed in pycnidia of species belonging to other genera. DNA sequencing facilitated numerous systematic revisions, and resulted in the addition of new genera to the long-standing coelomycetes such as Septoria , Mycosphaerella , Phoma , Coniothyrium and Phomopsis ( Diaporthe ) (Crous et al., 2001, de Gruyter et al., 2013, Gomes et al., 2013, Verkley et al., 2013, Verkley et al., 2014). Therefore, a comprehensive study was needed to place them with high confidence in the context of a phylogenetically-based classification.…”

“…A BLAST search of partial sequences of large subunit and internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) revealed that TR-022 possessed the highest sequence similarities with Paraconiothyrium brasiliense CBS 122851 (99.7%) and Paraphaeosphaeria sporulosa CBS 824.68 (96.8%), respectively. The phylogenetic tree based on ITS sequences clearly indicated that TR-022 was nested in a ParaphaeosphaeriaParaconiothyrium clade 11 and did not cluster with any species within a clade ( Figure 2). Thus, TR-022 was designated as a Paraphaeosphaeria sp.…”
