“…Quantitative findings indicated that the perception of the healthcare encounter began with acculturation; and both quantitative and qualitative findings indicated that MNs struggled with acculturation, consistent with other studies (Brunton et al, 2019;Goh & Lopez, 2016;Pung & Goh, 2017;Yu et al, 2018). Our qualitative findings further elucidated acculturation difficulties that extended to both the social and work environments.…”

“…Many MNs lack an understanding of several aspects of their host country's culture. They report issues with communication, both verbal and nonverbal, problems adapting to the host country's work procedures and routines, and other difficulties adjusting to the new culture and society (Brunton et al, 2019; Yu et al, 2018). MNs who are culturally and linguistically diverse from the native population are at particular risk for these stresses and difficulties (Schilgen et al, 2019).…”

“…A cross‐sectional study of 603 emergency department nurses in Canada showed that nurses were more likely to leave because of perceived differences than other factors and that intrinsic cognitive difference due to background was detrimental to teamwork (Wolff, 2009). A phenomenological study indicated that language barrier and inability to integrate oneself with the local culture were the reasons why nurses work less efficiently and cohesively (Yu et al, 2018).…”

“…Along with this, the ratio of immigrant nurses in big cities has been rising to 50% (Li, 2014). For these immigrant nurses, the local dialect and eating habits are what they need to re‐learn and adapt (Yu et al, 2018). According to information and decision model theory, team members who have the same attributes have the same knowledge, skills, and abilities (Clark et al, 2000), compared with homogeneous teams, which means the nurses with same demographic features such as age, gender, education, background, and personality (King et al, 2009).…”
